american was maxine kingston. i read her in high school and was greatly affected by reading about the woman warrior. before her there were few. there were some but didn't make that economic splash. they were never read in a large way. maxine was the first one we read her in school we knew of her. she was not out there like anny tan was when she wrote the joy luck club. so much of it is timing. it meant all the history and the voices before then had been silent. my generation of writers came in and we heard stories of women and men and the family of a different generation. a lot of us had been writing about that because they were silenced for so long. i am involved with the book prize. it's a pacific rim book prize in which books come from asia and all over the pacific rim. in the last 11 years it's been a prize we read so many books that have come from voices of new writers. i'm always amazed and they are writing different storers i wrote when i started. all the people have come through now. if you look at the list of indian and japanese authors and chinese authors it's now we are ver

congressman jack kingston. thank you for taking the time on what i know is a very busy day. tell me -- let's talk mood, first of all. ten days ago, two weeks ago the house republican conference very much in the news. a bill -- the so-called plan b could not be brought to the house floor because it lacked the votes. where is the house republican conference now in their mentality on making a deal on the fiscal cliff, and is there reason for optimism if something does get produced from the senate sometime today? >> you know, i think there is reason for optimism, first of all, because, chris, you have to remember, we actually passed as part of our budget in the spring an alternative to this possess. we did another such bill in august, and then before we left prayer to plan b, we passed a third bill, so we're glad to see the senate move, and when they do, we'll have something to sink our teeth into. we might not necessarily accept it as-is. there will be some amending, i suppose, lots of debate, but i think that the house is ready to act. the difference between a senate proposal now and

this together here. those are spokes people in kingston, new hampshire, which is where nancy lanza, her maiden name is champion. she's the mother of the alleged killer back here in newtown, connecticut. it is our understanding that she was divorced maybe four years ago, but her husband, peter, still made his home here in the state of connecticut. how far away is not clear at the moment. and his other son, ryan lanza, age 24, who was the person who many thought was the guilty party on this early on, was living in hoboken, new jersey. we wanted to bring that you because we're trying to piece this together throughout the entire day because here in connecticut, police say there is still no sign, at least publicly anyway, there has been no sign of a motive. but we are learning more about 20-year-old adam lanza as we move throughout the hour. here is a picture said to be from 2005 which would mean around the age of 14 shown here. sources telling fox news he may have had a developmental disorder and people who knew the shooter now describe him as smart but, quote, very remote socially. accordi

know why when congressman jack kingston says "was this young man addicted to violent video games was there a hollywood influence? i think we can't just stop at guns." nobody just wants to stop at guns but we do want to start with them. there are several things we don't know but what we do know is where we can start to take action. we know that last friday, it was semi-automatic guns, once deemed deadly enough to ban that took the lives of 20 6 and 7-year-old children and seven others. semi-automatic guns killed 12 in aurora in july. it was semi-automatic guns that killed six and wounded 13 including congresswoman gabby giffords in tucson last year. it was semi-automatic guns that killed 33 at virginia tech in 2007. and we know that none of the tragedies would have occurred if not for the guns. so while the country grasps for answers and washington tries to offer solutions let's honor the victims by starting what we know the guns are the problem. >> i am here to make a citizen's arrest.
